Meet our bus driver, Mr. Bruce

“My wife, Debbie, is from Pensacola.  When we met, she told em she would return to the beautiful white beaches of Pensacola one day.  So in 2004 we gave up our jobs in the metro Atlanta area and moved to Pensacola to help take care of her mother.

Driving has been part of my life for over 30 years.  I retired as a driver for a printing company and drove car carriers for several years before moving to Pensacola.

In late 2006, after working some time as an Escambia County substitute bus driver, I was approached to temporarily fill in as the Pensacola Beach Elementary School bus driver.  This job allowed me the flexible hours I needed so I jumped at the opportunity to make it permanent.

I has been a great five years.  Mr. Castleberry, the teachers, staff and all the parents are supportive and that really makes a big difference.  Since taking over the route, I have customized it each year in an effort to provide a higher level of service and minimize the distance each child has to walk.  I feel like I have a personal responsibility to make sure the children are safely delivered to school and back home.  Safety is critical.

At the same time, I understand it is a long ride for some of the students so I try to make it fun as well.  The students love to hear the radio and as long as that doesn’t increase the noise level too much it helps to pass the time.  Once a month and on special occasions I declare a ‘candy day’.”
