Accelerated Reader Program
Accelerated Reader is a computer based reading incentive program for students in grades 1–5. Awards are given based on how many points are earned for reading and comprehending stories. There is a complete list of AR books in our media center on the AR page.
Ready…. Set…. Go
Students Read a Book – they choose their book and read them at their own pace
Students Take a Test – short tests are taken on computers in the classroom and library.
Students Earn Points – When they pass the reading tests, they get points which can be redeemed for prizes.
Parents – help your children with AR
Help your child select books . AR books in the Media Center are designated with a special sticker indicating reading level.
Help your child read in their zone. The Reading Zone is your child’s independent reading level.
Ask your child’s teacher about their AR progress. Teachers are able to access and print reports that chart your child’s reading progress. You can request these reports at any time or look for them in homework folders.
STAR is a computerized program that tests student’s reading level using a series of sentances and short stories. STAR tells the teacher a child’s reading zone. Students take a STAR test at the beginning and end of the school year.
Research confirms that children who use AR show faster growth in reading achievement than those who don’t.
Nothing breeds success like succes. Regular use of AR results in a love of reading!
Meet Our Media Specialist — Pam Speer
This year, Ms. Speer plans not only to emphasize the importance of reading to students but also to instill a love for reading and encourage students to read for pleasure. She will be doing this by introducing and exposing them to quality children’s literature, author studies, book talks, children created book reviews, and incentives for participating in the Accelerated Reader Program. During weekly library time, students will also learn how to use the online catalog, use reference materials, identify parts of a book, and how to check out books. They will also learn about the Dewey Decimal System and how materials are organized in the library/media center.
Ms. Speer works at PBES on Tueday, Thursday and Fridays. Volunteers keep the library open all week long. If you are interested in volunteering in the school media center please contact the school at 934–4020.
